Fisetin is a type of flavonoid with antioxidant properties and found in many different types of fruits and vegetables, strawberries seem to contain the most at around 2mg of Fisetin in each berry. As with other flavonoids like Reservetrol, Fisetin also increases Sirt gene expression and has been shown in laboratory studies to extend the life of simple organisms like worms, and fruit flies. Interest in Fisetin began when researchers noticed a correlation between strawberry consumption and improved cognitive abilities among elderly people eating the fruit. One study published in the journal Aging Cell found mice genetically prone to Alzheimer’s didn’t develop any sings of memory impairment, if they were fed Fisetin. One of the mechanism by which fisetin might protect against degenerative brain conditions is by activating certain transcription factors like Nrf2 which increases various androgynous antioxidants like glutathione, that have a protective effect on nerve cells.
