Curcumin is the biologically active ingredient in turmeric root responsible for its anti-oxidant effect’s. The root is a member of the ginger family and has been used traditionally as a spice, in both Egypt and India for at least 6000 years. The percentage of Curcumin found in turmeric is very low, with the raw root providing only around 2% of the biologically active curcumin compounds, also called curcuminoids.
